  • Menopause can impact your mental health significantly due to the changes in two hormones: estrogen and progesterone. The research tells us that estrogen is neuroprotective. In menopause, estrogen and progesterone decrease. Thus, increasing the risk for mood disorder and other cognitive changes often referred to as “menopause brain fog.” Women often also report increased irritability, sleep difficulties, mood swings, depression, and anxiety during this time period. Black women often experience menopause at an earlier age and can have more severe symptoms that often are overlooked by healthcare professionals. A small study of Asian American women found differences in menopausal symptoms among different subgroups of Asian women. Filipino-American women in this study had significantly higher severity scores of psychological symptoms compared with Korean-American women.
